The CLCA issues the Beautification Awards every year to showcase San Diego’s excellence in landscape construction and maintenance. With categories covering residential and commercial landscape construction, maintenance, and renovation, there are many awards for the CLCA to present. This year, one of the winners was Shasta Landscaping, in the category of Commercial Construction, for our work on the Frame & Focus production, which was sponsored by the landscape organization ASLA San Diego.

The main feature with Frame & Focus was designing a fantastic recreational area and creating that social atmosphere within the communities. The uniqueness for this project came from the planting design and the layout of the sidewalk and the patios for each home. It was important to establish an efficient, yet beautiful planting design that worked with the hardscape provided by Shea Homes. The C2 Collaborative team had a challenge on their hands with making these small spaces work for each home as well as obtaining that social aspect that was desired for the project. While the models’ biggest challenge was making a small space work as a backyard, the production’s biggest challenge was in the planting design and making the plant material work with the varying sun exposure. Shasta worked very closely with Chris Fortunato in order to change up the palates and the irrigation systems to ensure the plant material survived. Without the innovative designs and solutions provided by Chris and the C2 Collaborative team, this project wouldn’t have been the success it was.
